This is our opportunity to collaborate with the Gore Park Outreach program. See below all the details:

Duration:

Arrive at 10-10:30 am, Ending at 2-2:30 pm – If you need to leave early, please let us know.

Clothing: 

For those who have confirmed their participation above, please ensure they come dressed for the weather as this will be happening Snow, Wind, Rain, Shine, Thunderstorms, Hail, etc. You will also be standing for the full duration of the volunteering so please bring comfortable footwear. Seating for any individuals is pending confirmation from Gore Park.

Attendance:

If any of you cannot attend, please text or call me before the day of so we can try and find a replacement. If you are sick or have a medical emergency, you will obviously be excused from attending.

Please note that all attendees should make the best effort to attend, if you do not show up or if there are no shows, there will be no one to replace that person and Gore Park will be short-staffed which we want to avoid.

Our role with Gore Park can be a wide range of options but for Saturday, March 29th, we will be assisting the Hot Food, Dairy, Non-Perishables, Grain, and Produce Tables with prepping, packaging hot meals and food for close to 800-1000+ people on that Saturday. 

Available Parking:

Parking will be available at the Indigo Lot at 32 James St S Parking Indigo Hamilton next to the CIBC – Parking will be compensated for this lot via parking passes provided by Gore Park (Jeff or Linda). Parking passes will be given to you during or at your departure.

This week our Rotary club members are invited to attend the 1st of 3 performance from Jayne Eastwood and her accolytes in the terrific play titled Women fully Clothed, hosted by theatre Aquarius. There won't be a morning meeting on Wednesday morning to make room in our busy schedule for this once in a lifetime experience.

Club Board meetings take place either in person or virtually once a month. During these meetings, we discuss the strategic activities of the club and progress towards the various objectives set for the year.

General membership attendance is welcome, while voting right only remain with members of the Board. 

Bio,

Marvin Ryder has taught for 40 years and has mentored more than 10,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

In 2000, Marvin was named as Chair of the Transition Board for the new City of Hamilton. During the Board’s one-year life, it organized the municipal election, created a new Hamilton Hydro corporation, and set service levels and budgets for a new, larger City of Hamilton. The Board identified more than $25 million in operational savings within the billion dollar City budget and developed a plan to reduce industrial and commercial property taxes by five percent – the first reduction in over a decade. This municipal work built on his earlier experience serving from 1990 to 1996 on the Board of Directors for Copps Coliseum, Hamilton Place, and the Hamilton Convention Centre (HECFI).

In 2001, Marvin was announced as Chair for the Hamilton Health Sciences Board of Directors responsible for operating the second largest hospital in Ontario with an annual budget over $1.0 billion. The seven sites (Henderson, General, McMaster, McMaster Children’s, Chedoke, St. Peter’s, and the Juravinski Cancer Centre) not only served as community hospitals but had regional specializations in geriatric care, cardiac care, oncology, and women’s and children’s health. He became Past Chair of the Board in 2003 and retired from the Board on June 30, 2010. Marvin serves on the Hamilton Health Sciences Research Institute Board of Directors and has served as Chair for the past four years. The Board oversees an endowment of $450 million with the proceeds of investment activities going to fund over $25 million of research at Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University.

In 2011, Marvin retired from the Boards of the Bay Area Health Trust (nine years) and the Desjardins Credit Union (three years). The latter coincided with the amalgamation of Desjardins with Meridian Credit Union on June 1, 2011.

He has written more than seventy case studies illustrating marketing, business strategy, and entrepreneurship problems Half of them have been published in leading Canadian marketing texts including case studies on Porsche, Union Gas, Crayola, and Molson Breweries.

Today, Marvin is most recognized for nearly 250 appearances annually on television (CTV, CBC, and Global), radio (Newstalk 1010, CKTB 610AM, CFRA 580AM and CFPL 980AM), and in newspapers (National Post, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, and the Hamilton Spectator) commenting on business issues of the day.

Karen Mossman, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Mossman is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health
Sciences, was recognized by the Women’s Executive Network as a Top 100 – Canada’s Most Powerful Women and received the 2024 Honorary Lifetime Membership Award from the International Cytokine and Interferon Society. Dr. Mossman has published over 160 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has contributed as author and editor to numerous books, including virology textbooks.

Dr. Mossman joined McMaster University in 2001, with a research focus on understanding the interactions between viruses and their hosts, both in normal healthy
cells and in cancer cells, with the goal of developing novel therapy approaches for emerging viral infections and cancer. She is currently working with industry to develop Bovine herpesvirus type I as a clinical oncolytic viral cancer immunotherapy. She will tell us about the latest research in her field, and explain how at the start
of the pandemic, her group helped isolate SARS-CoV-2 from Canadian patients which enabled COVID-related studies across the country.
