Building a Children's Hospice in Hamilton
Apr 12, 2023 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM

As we continue with our theme of Maternal and Child Health, we will hear from Doug Matina, Director of the Pediatric Hospice Project at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice. We will learn things like how a Children's Hospice differs from an Adult Hospice, and the important role a Children's Hospice plays in the lives of families in our region.

Doug Mattina, born and raised in Hamilton, spent the majority of his career in public service both at the federal and provincial levels and as a community builder. As a senior diplomat for almost two decades, Doug worked on the most pressing and important international and high-level challenges related to human rights, governance, democratic accountability and transparency as well as assignments at Canada's central agencies (Treasury Board Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office) and as a chief of departmental staff for both a senior assistant deputy minister and a foreign minister. His contributions were both at the bilateral level and also towards the improvement of international institutions.

Doug has also worked on various federal, provincial and municipal political and leadership campaigns and has held executive political party positions.

In early 2020, Doug's father spent his last days at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice. This experience was so meaningful, he shifted his personal and professional focus and dedication to improving palliative care in Ontario. As a board member of Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, subsequently as the chair of the pediatric committee and now as the Director of Public Affairs and the Pediatric Hospice Project, Doug works collaboratively to change the landscape of palliative care in Hamilton and beyond through a lens of compassion, dignity and equity.
