| 2025-11-12 07:30:00Z | Nov. 12, 2025 | Rotary D7090 Spotlight – Meet Joanne Serkeyn, RAGA |
Nov. 12, 2025 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. |
Williams Fresh Cafe |
Have you ever heard the term “Rotary Action Group” or “RAG” for short? If you have not, you are not alone. Well, what is a “RAG”? Rotary Action Groups are independent, Rotary-affiliated groups made up of people from around the world who are experts in a particular field, such as economic development, peace, addiction prevention, the environment, or water, to name just a few.
Action groups offer their technical expertise and support to help clubs plan and implement projects to increase our impact, one of Rotary's strategic priorities. This support includes helping clubs find partners, funding, and other resources. Action groups can also help clubs and districts prepare grant applications, conduct community assessments, and develop plans to monitor and evaluate their projects.
“RAG”’s are akin to, or are, cause-based groups, and in Rotary there are many to choose from.
Our own DG David Alexander presented on behalf of the Environmental Sustainability RAG at the International Conference, and the WASH RAG has worked with some of our clubs on freshwater initiatives. And that is really the tip of the iceberg. If you have a passion for a certain cause, you are quite likely to find a Rotary Action Group that matches your passion.
Now D7090 has an Ambassador for the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS): Joanne Serkeyn, President of the Rotary Club of Lincoln.
A 26-year veteran of the City of Hamilton Police force, working in the DNA Unit, Joanne has spent much time dealing with missing persons and the issue of mental health. These work experiences led for to become aware of the large issue of human trafficking and the impacts it makes on our communities. After learning about Rotary Action Groups at a District training event, Joanne discovered that Rotary actually had an Action Group that dealt with this issue: RAGAS!
Without much to go on, except her passion for the issue, Joanne was able to engage RAGAS in Canada, where she attended a meeting and joined the group. Wanting to make an impact in lives of those who are most at risk and have no voice of their own, Joanne has become our D7090 Ambassador for RAGAS, and helped D7090 become a supporter of the efforts of RAGAS and against the issue of human trafficking.
It is Joanne’s goal to bring more awareness to D7090 about the issue of Human Trafficking, Advocate for legislation on the issue, bring speakers to our clubs, and get clubs to engage RAGAS for upcoming projects.
This is such a big issue affecting so many troubled people in our communities under the surface. It is a complex issue, and cuts across many of the areas of focus in Rotary. More information on this RAG can be found at https://ragas.online
Certainly, you can reach out to our own District Advocate, Joanne Serkeyn, for more direction. RAG’s offer Rotary Clubs and Rotarians the resources and guidance to take on issues and create projects that you a passionate about, and even enable you to recruit potential members to your club who have a particular interest. We are so fortunate in D7090 to have Joanne Serkeyn, and her passion for service to help and impact those most in need.
All members of the Rotary Club of Hamilton AM, visiting Rotarians and others are invited to attend our weekly meeting, during which we will discuss various club matters. Please consider inviting some visitors for this fascinating talk.

| 2025-11-19 07:15:00Z | Nov. 19, 2025 | Cycling Without Age |
Nov. 19, 2025 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. |
Williams Fresh Cafe |
At today's club meeting our guest speakers will be Mike Moulden and Nanc Gray from Cycling Without Age, Hamilton - Burlington. The Hamilton and Burlington chapter of Cycling Without Age was initiated by retired accountant Nancy Gray and her friend from McMaster Jill Axisa. Jill and Nancy started planning and working on this chapter since June 2018. The Hamilton location of the chapter became a reality when Tammy Heidbuurt, Executive Director at New Hope Community Bikes got involved in late 2020. Tammy reached out to Emily at the Hamilton and Oshawa Port Authority who was looking to bring more people (especially seniors) to the waterfront trail. Nancy reached out to her contact at McMaster University – Dee Henne (AVP & CFO) who was looking for opportunities for more staff involvement in the downtown Hamilton community. With generous financial donations from both HOPA and McMaster, New Hope Community Bikes was able officially launch the CWA Hamilton & Burlington chapter, and to purchase the first trishaw in July 2021. The Welcome Inn Community Centre became the first location for the chapter to offer rides weekly rides to the seniors in its program. In that first summer of 2021 22 passengers received rides from 8 pilots. In 2022 the Burlington location was opened when the City of Burlington offered space for the 2nd trishaw, which was purchased through the generosity of an anonymous donor. A third trishaw was purchased in 2023 when the chapter received a New Horizons Seniors Program Grant from the federal government. Fundraising allowed the purchase of a large sea container to store the trishaws in the off season. By the end of 2023, there were nine weekly locations and several annual one-day events that the chapter participated in. Partner agencies and centres in 2023 included: Welcome Inn Community Centre, Shalom Village Seniors’ Apartments, City Housing Hamilton, Burlington Seniors’ Centre, Maple Villa Long Term Care, Chartwell’s Christopher Terrace and Martha’s Landing Retirement Homes, Wellington Square United Church’s HUB/ Friday Meal Bag Program, Good Shepherd’s HOMES and Seniors Assisted Living Programs, SAM Day Program, L ’Arche, Salvation Army’s Lawson Ministries, St. Peter’s Residence at Chedoke and Idlewyld Manor. Each of these agencies organized their clients to participate in the program. The program is thriving as a result of approximately 65 volunteers, including our pilot trainers, site coordinators, pilots and bike buddies who make it possible for passengers to ‘feel the wind in their hair’ and due in no small part to New Hope Community Bikes who continue to provide the legal structure including liability and property insurance, administration, grant management, tax receipting for donations, trishaw transportation, and maintenance. Speaker's Bio Mike Moulden is a volunteer and fundraiser for the Hamilton &Burlington CWA chapter. He lives in Dundas having retired three years ago after over 50 years in the steel industry and educational field. The entrance is the last door, ground level, at the colesium at the east end of the building (towards the Library and Farmer's Market). Parking is a bit of a challenge in this area. There are parking meters on Park St North or Vine Street nearby. Farmer's Market parking is another block east. Maybe double up in cars if you can? Mary Anne, son Paul and I were there last Thurday doing reconicance (and eating supper!) and we think you will like what you see!

Our April Club Social is planned for April 15 - come see Jayne Eastwood's first movie from 1970, "Goin" Down the Road", playing at 6:45 pm at the Playhouse Theatre, 177 Shermon North, Hamilton. Following the movie, there will be a Question & Answer session with Jayne where we can ask all kinds of indelicate questions (after all, she is pregnant and unwed in this movie!). A pre-movie dinner option for you is to support Tm McClemont's Positive Health Network's fundraiser called "A Taste for Life", which opens at 5pm at local restaurants. For information on participating restaurants go to A Taste for Life 2026 - Positive Health Network. SEE BELOW FOR THE MOVIE SYNOPIS AND OTHER ACOLADES! In rural Nova Scotia, childhood friends -- Joey (Paul Bradley) and Peter (Doug McGrath) -- set off in search of a better life in the big city. After arriving in Toronto, the pals find meager but steady work at a soda bottling plant. Joey then learns that his girlfriend, Betty (Jayne Eastwood), is pregnant with their child. But the happy occasion is dimmed by a setback when both Joey and Peter are let go from their jobs, and must now figure out some way to survive in the city. Contains 2 songs by Bruce Cockburn that were specifically written in 1970 for the film. "Going Down the Road" and "Another Victim of the Rainbow". Goin Down the Road has been preserved as a masterwork by the Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada, and ranked in TIFF's Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time every time the list has been compiled — in 1984, 1993, 2004, and 2015.
Jayne Eastwood is a legendary Canadian actress, comedian and Hamilton resident, born and raised in Toronto. As a castmember in the musical Godspell (1972-73), Eastwood worked alongside Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, and Eugene Levy, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. While her credits include countless television appearances and voice over work, Eastwood is best known for her film roles, including her iconic feature film debut in Goin' Down the Road (1970), Videodrome (1983), Anne of Green Gables (1986), The Santa Clause (1994), My Big Fat Greek Wedding trilogy, Chicago (2002), Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Hairspray (2007). Among her many accolades, Jayne Eastwood received the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement in 1999. |

William's Fresh Cafe |
The Hamilton AM Club has two corporations: one we call the Club Operating and the other our new Charitable Corporation (replaceing what we used to call "The Trust"). Each corporation has its board members and Executives and uses the same operating year - July 1 to June 30 of the next year. In the first half of thoday's meeting you will see the previous year's financial statements and the consolidated result. As this is an Annual Meeting, voting will be involved. At 8:00 am, we will hear from Carolyn Boutin, Exxecutive Director of the Centre for Diverse Learners, recipeint of a Major Grant from our club. "Our mission is to support and empower neurodiverse learners through advocacy, education, and services. We aim to build a world where individuals with neurodiverse learning needs are included, empowered, and celebrated. Our programs are designed to help students learn on their own terms, in the ways that work for them. In the short term, we teach students and parents how to advocate for their rights in the classroom. In the long term, we want to make sure they don’t have to. Our goal is a world where our organization isn’t needed – where every student automatically gets the help they deserve." Speaker Bio All members of the Rotary Club of Hamilton AM, Visiting Rotarians and other guests are invited to attend our weekly meeting, during which we will discuss various club matters.
